Narrative
"According to his grandson, Karl Kurtz, "Grandpa was a wonderful man, always kind and pleasant. He always kept harmony in the family and allowed no vulgar talk or fighting. He was good to his family in many ways, helping cook and caring for the children when they were sick. He always said grace and went to High Mass every Sunday at St. Matthew's. His only vanity was his mustache, which he carefully trimmed and dyed black."
It was not uncommon in the late 1880s for families to have large numbers of children and the Schmalzbauers, who came to teown in 1888, were no exception. John Schmalzbauer and his wife Katherine Riener Schmalzbauer, had both been born in Europe. John's parents, Michael and Agnes, were from Germany and Katherine had been born in Austira in 1867. When they decided to emigrate, John and his brothers Anton and Otto chose Minnesota as their ultimate destination, eventually settling in West St. Paul. John and Katherine were married in the Assumption Church in St. Paul in 1885.
Their oldest child, Otilla, was born in 1886 and John arrived in 1888. Daughter Katherine made her appearance in 1889m followed by Joesph in 1891. Frank was born in 1892 and Louis in 1894. Anne, Otto and Agnes arrived between 1895 and 1899 and Mary came in 1901. Lawrence, or "George" Schmalzbauer was born in 1903, and the youngest of the family, Elizabeth, arrived in 1906.
The family lived at 1020 Seminole and John worked as a wood finisher, roofer and builder. He was one of the foundering members of the West St. Paul Commercial Club in 1918 and enjoyed working in his extensive gardens. According to his grandson, Karl Kurtz, "Grandpa was a wonderful man, always kind and pleasant.
------------------------------------------------------------------
"When Karl Kurtz wrote the Schmalzbauer story for the West St. Paul centennial in 1987, only Mary and Anne were still living of the original twelve Schmalzbauer children. Yet, like so many of the city's founders, the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the original immigrants have continued to make West St. Paul their home. When John and Katherine Schmalzbauer settled on Seminole Avenue in 1888, they were governed by the city call South St. Paul, which then included all of the current West St. Paul, South St.Paul, Sunfish Lake and parts of Inver Grove, Eagan and Mendota. In just a few short months after their arrival, the current City of West St. Paul would be born.
These forst one-hundred thirty years of the are were marked by the trials of the pioneers, the arrival of the first businesses and by the establishment of families who have called West St. Paul, and not to be St. Paul, but to become their very own city. The process of that choice was marked by controversy, political intrigue and disruption. Yet for many of the founding families, who saw the city progress from farmland to bustling business centerm the battle was well worth it."
